Te Puna Cataloguing

What is WebCat?

Te Puna WebCat is a web-based interface that allows you to add holdings or short bibliographic records to the National Bibliographic Database. Your records are updated immediately and can be viewed in WebCat or Te Puna Search. WebCat also allows you to download MARC records into your own library catalogue.

Benefits of WebCat include:

  • choice of templates when creating bibliographic records
  • allows creation of holdings records
  • copy cataloguing
  • import MARC 21 records from remote sites
  • real time updating for all new bibliographic and holdings records
  • industry supported standards - Z39.50 to search databases, and MARC 21
  • search the 010 to the 999 of the MARC bibliographic record
  • batch files of MARC records (to which you added holdings) can be transferred to your local system via ftp (file transfer protocol).

What is the Cataloguing Client?

Te Puna Cataloguing Client is designed for organisations who contribute to the National Bibliographic Database by doing original cataloguing and adding holdings. It is offered to libraries that meet criteria set by the National Library. It requires software to be loaded onto your local PC.

In addition to the functionality provided by WebCat, the Cataloguing Client offers the following benefits:

  • create full original bibliographic records in MARC 21 format
  • cloning of bibliographic and holdings records
  • validation of MARC 21 tags and headings
  • automatic insertion of URLs into the 856 field
  • online help available for MARC 21 tags
  • diacritic data entry
  • a choice of search types, including keyword, command, headings, Boolean and search limiting
  • retain search history for each session
  • import MARC 21 records from remote sites
  • download bibliographic, holdings and authority records to local systems
  • work folders for working records
  • all Library of Congress Name and Subject authority records available to search and use in your original catalogue record
  • create your own templates or use provided templates for creating records
  • choose your own font and colours for your cataloguing desktop.

It is possible for a library to use both the Cataloguing Client (for cataloguers doing original cataloguing) and Web Cat (for staff doing copy cataloguing).
